Places of Interest
The village is considered one of the prettiest in England and centres around the village green and pond, which is surrounded by historic cottages, gift and antique shops and tea rooms.
Thaxted appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Tachesteda, Old English for "place where thatch was got." Once a centre of cutlery manufacture, Thaxted went into decline with the rise of Sheffield as a major industrial centre.
Saffron Walden is a medium-sized market town in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is located 12 miles north of Bishop's Stortford, 15 miles south of Cambridge and approx 35 miles north of London. The town retains a rural appearance and many very old buildings dating from the medieval period onwards.
Bardfield is the home of many important twentieth century English artists who hosted a series of important 'open house' exhibitions in the village during the 1950s. These exhibitions garnered national press attention and attracted thousands of visitors.
